EXOTIC FRUIT

This Epiphyllum was collected by Elena Roché on a trip to Maui.  It is now growing in a pot in her garden.  Epiphyllums are "jungle cactus" and are most commonly found growing on host trees as epiphytes.  This example was found growing in the ground alongside the road North of Lahaina.  What you see in this watercolor painting is the exotic fruits that develop from the flower buds.  After the flowers bloom and then fall away, the bud continues to swell and eventually becomes a fruit with whitish-purple, juicy flesh and black seeds.

This artwork was published in The Watercolor Flower Artist's Bible and it won second place in The Best of California Artists and Artisans book.
